English Language Variants

English is spoken differently around the world. A boot in Britain is a trunk in the US. A biscuit in Australia is a cookie in Canada. Our English variant packs adapt vocabulary so children see the words their community actually uses — making flashcards feel familiar and relevant rather than foreign.

Each variant starts from the same 2,917 base vocabulary items, then substitutes regional terms where appropriate. The percentage different shows how many items were changed — a higher percentage means more localisation, not lower quality.

Methodology

Each vocabulary item in every variant was evaluated by an AI language model on the same four dimensions used across all 129+ language packs: meaning accuracy, naturalness for children, correct usage, and contamination risk. Scores range from 0–100.

A Note on Flagged Items

Some items are flagged with low scores because the automated evaluator occasionally marks legitimate regional English terms as “wrong language” — for example, marking hut or barn as incorrect when they are perfectly standard English. These are false positives in the evaluation pipeline, not actual errors in the vocabulary. The true error rate for English variants is very low. We are actively improving the evaluator to handle English-to-English regional variation more accurately.
